Modern paint consists of three categories of materials which include pigments, binders, solvents, and fillers. The “vehicle” is the liquid material. The vehicle is comprised of volatile and nonvolatile materials. The nonvolatile materials include resins and oils. The volatile materials include ketones, esters, alcohol, aromatics, and aliphatics. The volatile materials are used to keep the binders from drying out and create the desired viscosity of the product. Fillers are used as pigment extenders to reduce costs and control rheorological properties.
Earth Color Pigments – naturally occurring inorganic material, typically a metal oxide.
Mineral Pigments – comprised of synthetic inorganic materials.
Plant Color Pigments – Comprised of natural organic plant material.
Synthetic Pigments – Most widely used, mimicking organic pigments.
Solvents – Include plasticizers, styrene-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic, polymers, and copolymers.
Binders – These include resins and oils
Fillers – These include clay, gypsum, and calcium carbonate
